🔧 Servicing & Sizing Guidance (Critical Information for Vintage Collectors)
* Recent Overhaul: The December 2024 Overhaul means the watch is mechanically sound and ready for use.
* Rolex Service Center (RSC) Eligibility: Rolex will service timepieces with aftermarket components, however they might insist on mandatory replacements with modern parts. Due to the watch’s 1956 vintage of more than 70 years old, an RSC service faces two main service hurdles:
1. Age and Discontinued Parts:
Rolex officially guarantees spare parts availability for at least 35 years after a model is discontinued. This watch is significantly older at more than 70 years old. The movement inside (likely a very small manual-wind movement for a 15mm case) requires parts that Rolex no longer stocks or manufactures.
* Parts Scarcity: The RSC may not have access to replacement parts for the small vintage movement and could refuse service. This does not mean it’s not authentic, please ask the right questions at RSC.
Enquire with RSC: For very old, collectible pieces, they may send the watch to their Heritage Department in Geneva. This service is extremely expensive and time-consuming, but they have the capability to fabricate or restore parts.
Recommendation for Service:
* Collector’s Recommendation: For these reasons, most serious collectors of true vintage Rolex utilize a highly specialized independent watchmaker to service the movement while prioritizing the preservation of all original parts.
* Strap Sizing: Sizing is achieved using the holes in the interchangeable leather straps. For maintenance on the unique buckle mechanism, professional handling is recommended.
What this means, is that it can be very costly to maintain, please be aware that collecting true vintage timepieces is a greatly rewarding & fulfilling, but ultimately very expensive passion.
