🌟 Richard Valentine Pitchford (1895-1973), more known as Cardini, has left a humongous legacy in the magic scene. His silky-smooth sleight of hand, extremely difficult and honed to perfection routines with cards, billard balls and cigarettes, gracefulness and unparalleled sense of humour have won him huge adulation of many magicians and fans across the world.
🌟 Back in 1930s he’s got his eyes on an unusual deck in Chicago-based Walgreen Drug Company. Peau Doux playing cards were bridge-sized and featured vivid one-way back design. Mrs. Walgreen named this deck using an anagram after her dog Podo. Consonant wording ‘Peau Doux’, however, could also be translated as ‘soft skin’ from French. Possibilities for colour-changing fans with this deck has captivated Cardini to the extent he bought out the whole run of these cards along with exclusive performance rights for his famous “The Suave Deceiver” Act.
🌟 90 years later original Peau Doux have become a true collector’s item, finding those on eBay is close to impossible. The last time that deck was seen at a special auction back in 2017, it was sold for $300.
🌟 Art of Play in collaboration with Potter & Potter and Pitchford Entertainment, Media and Magic, released a replica of Peau Doux playing cards commemorating Cardini’s remarkable life and career. This poker-sized edition features almost identical design: a golden Pegasus pictured using metallic inks jumping over the red, black and white rounded shapes on the backs. Illustrator Wade J. Callender has come up with the artwork for the Ace of Spades, Jokers with Cardini’s silhouette and a vintage tax stamp for the matte Peau Doux tuck case.
